about

I found a glockenspiel mallet in my purse. I'd just flown in to Washington DC from Fort Lauderdale by way of Houston. My day started at 2 am when I woke up on the balcony of my hotel room. I'd gone out the night before to listen to the ocean waves and the crickets. Since my work day started at 4:30am East Coast time that morning I fell asleep under a blanket on the chaise lounge just as evening fell. Another early morning and another long day and I was greeted with a small hotel room with the heater blasting and snow instead of sand outside my hotel window. I was tired and then I found the mallet and got to thinking that this was the last days of the RPM Challenge. I was disappointed that all I'd recorded were lost melodies in various cities I'd recorded to put up on DEWART records and a cassette recording of my set at the Art Jabba Presents:The Stories We Tell Ourselves a few weeks ago. On the opposite side of the country it was doubtful that I'd be able to turn anything into an album with only one day to go on the Challenge to create an original album in the month of February. I called Kurt Bauer. I had planned to record with ANIMAL/object as they'd kindly allowed me to join them on an evening of recording music in January and through the magic of BANGSNAP Records a gem was produced in full from that evening. A blizzard in Denver prevented me from joining them as my flight from Los Angeles had been cancelled. Kurt answered, taking a few moments to realize it was me, and then said "give me a half hour to set up".  I called back and an hour went by recording exactly what came out with my hotel room in Virginia, that glockenspiel mallet, and my voice as my instrument and Kurt with his set up of a banjo, guitar, his voice and speaker phone as his in Colorado. It was a true teacupexperiment. -Haaland
